WiMAX stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, a telecom abbreviation.
Wireless broadband technology based on the IEEE 802.16 standard, marketed in the late 2000s as a 4G competitor to LTE for mobile and fixed internet access.
Example: The HTC EVO 4G connected to Sprint's WiMAX network in 2010, years before LTE reached the town.
Usage notes
Sprint and Clearwire launched US mobile WiMAX service in 2008, and the HTC EVO 4G (2010) was the first 4G phone in the US. Most operators chose LTE instead, and Sprint shut its WiMAX network in 2015. WiMAX survived longer for fixed wireless access in some developing markets. The WiMAX Forum promoted interoperability.
