VST stands for Virtual Studio Technology, a software abbreviation also used in entertainment.
Plug-in standard created by Steinberg that lets software instruments and audio effects, such as synthesizers, compressors and reverbs, run inside digital audio workstations like Cubase, FL Studio, Reaper and Ableton Live.
Example: I bought a new VST synth and loaded it on an instrument track in FL Studio.
Usage notes
Steinberg introduced VST in 1996 with Cubase, and VST3 (2008) is the current version. Competing plug-in formats include Apple's Audio Units (AU), required by Logic Pro, and Avid's AAX for Pro Tools. "VSTi" refers specifically to instrument plug-ins, and many vendors ship all three formats in one installer.
