VSG stands for Vertical sleeve gastrectomy, a surgical abbreviation.

Bariatric operation that removes about 75 to 80 percent of the stomach, leaving a narrow tube-shaped "sleeve" that limits intake and lowers hunger hormone levels. It is the most commonly performed weight loss operation in the United States and worldwide.

Example: Laparoscopic VSG; POD 1 leak test negative, start bariatric clear liquids.

Usage notes

Also called sleeve gastrectomy (SG), or LSG for the laparoscopic version. Patients typically lose about 60 percent of their excess weight. New or worsening acid reflux is a known drawback that sometimes requires conversion to gastric bypass. Lifelong vitamin supplementation and follow-up are recommended.
