Appy stands for Appendectomy, a surgical abbreviation.

Surgical team shorthand for removal of the appendix, usually laparoscopically, the standard treatment for acute appendicitis. It is one of the most common emergency operations worldwide.

Example: Lap appy for acute uncomplicated appendicitis; discharged on POD 1.

Usage notes

British usage is appendicectomy. Antibiotics alone can treat selected uncomplicated cases, as the 2020 CODA trial showed, though some patients later need surgery, especially when an appendicolith is present. The first recorded appendectomy was performed by Claudius Amyand in London in 1735. Formal operative notes spell the procedure out rather than writing "appy".
