VHDL stands for VHSIC Hardware Description Language, an electronics & electrical abbreviation.
Hardware description language developed for the US Department of Defense's Very High Speed Integrated Circuit (VHSIC) program and standardized as IEEE 1076 in 1987. VHDL is strongly typed and verbose, and is widely used in Europe, aerospace and defense FPGA design.
Example: The safety-critical controller logic is written in VHDL and formally reviewed line by line.
Usage notes
The acronym is nested: the V stands for VHSIC, itself an abbreviation. VHDL began as a way to document the behavior of chips supplied to the military before simulation tools were built around it. Engineers often know both VHDL and Verilog, since companies standardize on one or the other.
