1. Venture capital

Business & Finance · Finance Abbreviations

Form of private equity financing that invests in early-stage, high-growth startups in exchange for equity, accepting a high risk of failure for the chance of very large gains. VC firms raise funds from institutional investors and invest in stages known as seed, Series A, Series B and later rounds.

Example: The startup raised $25 million in a Series A led by two Silicon Valley VC firms.

VC also refers to an individual venture capitalist, as in "a VC on our board." Fund returns typically follow a power law, with a few big winners generating most of the profit. Managers traditionally earn a 2 percent annual management fee and 20 percent of profits (carried interest), though top firms may charge more.

2. Voice chat

Texting & Internet Slang · Gaming Slang Abbreviations

Real-time voice communication with teammates or friends, through game clients, Discord or console parties. Players ask "hop in VC?" or "join VC."

Example: Hop in VC so we can coordinate the next fight.

Discord's voice channels made VC central to online gaming culture. Voice chat speeds up coordination but also exposes players to harassment, so many games offer mute and report tools. In business, VC usually means venture capital, which context makes clear.

3. Victoria Cross

Military · Military Award and Decoration Abbreviations

Highest British and Commonwealth award for gallantry in the face of the enemy, open to all ranks. Holders place the letters VC after their names, ahead of all other honors.

Example: Private Johnson Beharry was awarded the VC for twice saving his comrades in Iraq.

Queen Victoria instituted the award in 1856 after the Crimean War. The crosses are traditionally cast from the bronze of cannons said to have been captured at Sevastopol. Australia, Canada and New Zealand now have their own Victoria Crosses. In Vietnam War contexts, VC means Viet Cong.

4. Viet Cong

Military · Military Unit and Organization Abbreviations

Communist guerrilla and political movement in South Vietnam, formally the National Liberation Front, that fought the South Vietnamese government and US forces during the Vietnam War with support from North Vietnam.

Example: VC units infiltrated the hamlet at night to collect rice and recruits.

"Viet Cong" is a contraction of a Vietnamese phrase meaning Vietnamese communist. US troops used the radio phonetic "Victor Charlie," shortened to "Charlie." The VC suffered heavy losses in the 1968 Tet Offensive. In the British honours system VC means the Victoria Cross.

5. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Caribbean nation with Kingstown as its capital and VCT as its alpha-3 code; its .vc domain is marketed to venture capital firms. The La Soufrière volcano erupted in 2021, forcing mass evacuations.

Example: Venture firms like .vc addresses, which belong to VC, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Grenadines include Bequia and Mustique, a private island popular with celebrities. VC also means venture capital and the Victoria Cross.
