UPPP stands for Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, a surgical abbreviation.
Operation that removes or reshapes tissue of the soft palate, uvula, tonsils and throat walls to enlarge the airway in obstructive sleep apnea or severe snoring. It is generally considered for people who cannot tolerate CPAP.
Example: UPPP with tonsillectomy for moderate OSA and CPAP intolerance.
Usage notes
Described by Japanese surgeon Shiro Fujita in 1981. Success varies widely depending on where the airway collapses, so drug-induced sleep endoscopy is often used to select patients. Newer options include hypoglossal nerve stimulation. Also written UP3.
