UPL stands for Unauthorized practice of law, a legal profession abbreviation.
Practicing law without a license, such as giving individualized legal advice, drafting legal documents for others or representing someone in court, which is prohibited and often a crime. It applies both to nonlawyers and to lawyers practicing in states where they are not admitted.
Example: The notario who prepared her asylum application was charged with UPL.
Usage notes
Each state defines the practice of law, usually through court rules or statutes. Exceptions include self-representation, limited licenses such as Arizona's legal paraprofessionals, and temporary practice under ABA Model Rule 5.5. Notario fraud, in which immigrants are misled by people claiming legal authority, is a frequent UPL problem, and AI legal tools have raised new questions.
