UAR stands for United Arab Republic, a country name abbreviation.
Union of Egypt and Syria formed in 1958 under Gamal Abdel Nasser, which ended when Syria withdrew in 1961. Egypt kept the name United Arab Republic until 1971.
Example: The UAR flag of red, white and black with two green stars was used again by Syria from 1980 until the fall of the Assad government in December 2024, after which Syria restored its green, white and black independence flag with three red stars.
Usage notes
The short-lived union was an early experiment in pan-Arab nationalism. Yemen joined in a looser confederation, the United Arab States, from 1958 to 1961.
