TVPI stands for Total value to paid-in capital, a finance abbreviation.
Private-fund performance multiple equal to cumulative distributions plus the current value of remaining investments, divided by the capital LPs have paid in. A TVPI of 1.8x means each dollar contributed is now worth $1.80 in cash returned and unrealized value.
Example: After seven years, the venture fund shows a 2.4x TVPI but only 0.6x DPI.
Usage notes
TVPI equals DPI plus RVPI (residual value to paid-in capital). Because the residual part depends on the GP's valuations of unsold holdings, LPs treat TVPI as less certain than DPI. These ratios are standard in quarterly reports to fund investors.
