TFCC stands for Triangular fibrocartilage complex, an anatomy abbreviation.
Cartilage and ligament structure on the pinky side of the wrist that cushions the ulna and stabilizes the distal radioulnar joint. Tears from falls on an outstretched hand or from degeneration cause ulnar-sided wrist pain, clicking and weakness when turning the forearm.
Example: MR arthrogram: peripheral TFCC tear with DRUJ instability.
Usage notes
Tears are classified by the Palmer system as traumatic (class 1) or degenerative (class 2). People whose ulna is longer than the radius (positive ulnar variance) are prone to degenerative tears. Treatment ranges from splinting to arthroscopic repair or ulnar shortening osteotomy.
