TEP stands for Totally extraperitoneal (hernia repair), a surgical abbreviation.
Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair in which the surgeon works in the space between the abdominal wall muscles and the peritoneum, without entering the abdominal cavity, and places mesh over the defect. It suits bilateral and recurrent groin hernias.
Example: Bilateral TEP inguinal hernia repair with mesh; same-day discharge.
Usage notes
Compared with TAPP, TEP avoids entering the abdomen but offers less working space and has a steeper learning curve. Both laparoscopic repairs generally cause less chronic pain and faster recovery than open repair. In otolaryngology TEP means tracheoesophageal puncture for voice restoration after laryngectomy.
