TEN stands for Toxic epidermal necrolysis, a dermatology abbreviation.

The most severe form of the SJS spectrum, with epidermal detachment over more than 30 percent of the body surface, causing burn-like skin loss, mucosal involvement and high risk of infection and organ failure. Mortality is roughly 25–35 percent, estimated by the SCORTEN score.

Example: TEN with 45 percent BSA detachment, SCORTEN 4; transfer to burn ICU, stop all nonessential drugs.

Usage notes

Also called Lyell syndrome after Scottish dermatologist Alan Lyell, who described it in 1956. Detachment between 10 and 30 percent is labeled SJS/TEN overlap. Stopping the culprit drug quickly improves survival. Treatments such as cyclosporine and IVIG are used, though evidence is limited.
