CategoriesMedical

T1DM stands for Type 1 diabetes mellitus, an endocrinology & diabetes abbreviation.

Autoimmune destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas, leaving the body unable to make insulin and requiring lifelong insulin therapy. It accounts for roughly 5–10 percent of diabetes, often begins in childhood or young adulthood, and can present with diabetic ketoacidosis.

Example: T1DM on insulin pump with CGM, A1C 7.1; no DKA admissions this year.

Usage notes

Also written T1D or DM1; advocacy groups such as Breakthrough T1D favor "T1D". Insulin was first used successfully in a patient in Toronto in January 1922 after work by Banting, Best, Collip and Macleod. Islet autoantibodies such as GAD65 confirm the diagnosis. In 2022 the FDA approved teplizumab, the first drug shown to delay the onset of clinical type 1 diabetes in high-risk people.
