CategoriesBusiness & Finance

SNB stands for Swiss National Bank, an economics abbreviation.

Central bank of Switzerland, with offices in Bern and Zurich, which sets monetary policy to keep inflation between 0 and 2 percent and often intervenes in currency markets to restrain the Swiss franc. Unusually, it is a listed company whose shares trade on the stock exchange.

Example: The SNB cut its policy rate and warned it could intervene to stop the franc from strengthening further.

Usage notes

From 2011 to January 2015 the SNB capped the franc at 1.20 per euro, and its sudden abandonment of the cap shook currency markets. Most of its shares are held by cantons and cantonal banks. Its huge foreign-currency reserves make it one of the world's largest holders of equities.
