SMD stands for Surface-mount device, an electronics & electrical abbreviation.
Electronic component designed to be soldered directly onto pads on the surface of a circuit board, without wire leads passing through holes. SMDs are far smaller than through-hole parts; a common 0402 resistor measures about 1.0 by 0.5 millimeters.
Example: Hand-soldering 0603 SMD parts is possible with tweezers, flux and a fine tip.
Usage notes
Package sizes such as 0805, 0603 and 0402 are named in hundredths of an inch in the imperial system, which causes confusion with metric codes. The smallest common passives, 01005 size, are smaller than a grain of sand. SMDs are placed by pick-and-place machines and soldered in reflow ovens.
