SIGMET stands for Significant meteorological information, an aviation abbreviation.
Aviation weather advisory warning all aircraft of hazards such as severe turbulence, severe icing, volcanic ash, dust storms or widespread thunderstorms. In the US, convective SIGMETs for thunderstorms are issued hourly by the Aviation Weather Center in Kansas City.
Example: A convective SIGMET covered most of eastern Kansas, so dispatch routed the flight north around the line of storms.
Usage notes
SIGMETs apply to all aircraft, whereas AIRMETs address hazards mainly significant to light aircraft. Outside the US they are issued by meteorological watch offices designated under ICAO rules, and volcanic ash SIGMETs draw on nine Volcanic Ash Advisory Centers worldwide. Pronounced "SIG-met."
