Stands forState Health Insurance Assistance Program
CategoriesMedical

SHIP stands for State Health Insurance Assistance Program, a health insurance abbreviation.

Federally funded network of state programs offering free, unbiased one-on-one counseling about Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medigap, Part D and related benefits. Counselors, many of them trained volunteers, help people compare plans and resolve billing problems.

Example: Call the SHIP before AEP; a counselor can compare drug plans for you for free.

Usage notes

Funded through the federal Administration for Community Living. SHIP counselors do not sell insurance or earn commissions, unlike brokers and agents. Some states give their programs local names, so Medicare.gov lists contacts by state.
