Sept stands for September, a month abbreviation.

The four-letter abbreviation for September preferred by AP style and many American publications, written with a period (Sept. 11). It is the only month AP shortens to four letters.

Example: The fall semester begins Sept. 2, the day after Labor Day.

Usage notes

AP abbreviates Sept. only when it accompanies a specific date. Labor Day in the US and Canada falls on the first Monday in September. Three-letter calendar headings and data systems use Sep instead, so both forms appear widely and neither is wrong. In American usage, Sept. 11 or 9/11 refers to the 2001 terrorist attacks.
