RTOS stands for Real-time operating system, a computer abbreviation.
Operating system that guarantees tasks respond within strict, predictable time limits, used in embedded devices such as engine controllers, medical pumps, drones, routers and spacecraft. Predictability matters more than raw throughput.
Example: The motor controller runs FreeRTOS, an RTOS that can switch tasks in a few microseconds.
Usage notes
"Hard" real-time systems treat a missed deadline as a failure, while "soft" ones tolerate occasional delays. Well-known examples include FreeRTOS (maintained by Amazon), Zephyr, VxWorks and QNX, which runs many car infotainment and driver-assistance systems. VxWorks has also flown on several NASA Mars missions. Pronounced "AR-toss".
