CategoriesWriting & Everyday

RSVP stands for Répondez s'il vous plaît (please reply), an email and office abbreviation.

Requests that invited guests tell the host whether they will attend, usually by a stated date. It appears on wedding invitations, party invites, event pages and formal business functions.

Example: Kindly RSVP by May 1 so we can give the caterer a final headcount.

Usage notes

The French phrase already means "please respond," so "please RSVP" is technically redundant, though widespread. "Regrets only" asks only those who cannot attend to reply. English uses RSVP as a verb ("Have you RSVPed?"), and engraved invitations often print R.S.V.P. or "r.s.v.p." with periods. Etiquette guides stress replying promptly whether or not you will attend.
