Profitability measure that compares the gain or loss from an investment with its cost, usually expressed as a percentage: gain minus cost, divided by cost. Its simplicity makes it the default yardstick for everything from marketing campaigns and equipment purchases to personal investments.
Example: The new warehouse scanners cost $80,000 and saved $120,000 in labor in year one, an ROI of 50 percent.
Pronounced as letters. ROI ignores the time value of money and the length of the holding period, so a 50 percent return over one year and over ten years look the same; analysts use IRR or annualized returns to correct for this. Because there is no single standard definition of "return," ROI figures from different sources are often not comparable. Marketing variants include ROAS (return on ad spend).
