PUG stands for Pick-up group, a gaming slang abbreviation.
Group of strangers assembled for a dungeon, raid or match, rather than an organized team or guild. Used as a noun and a verb ("pugging a raid").
Example: We pugged the last two spots and somehow cleared it.
Usage notes
PUGs are known for unpredictable quality and lack of coordination, so "PUG" can carry a mildly negative tone. Common in MMORPGs and team games. Not to be confused with the dog breed.
