PPN stands for Peripheral parenteral nutrition, a pharmacy abbreviation.
Short-term IV nutrition given through a peripheral vein, with a lower dextrose and amino acid concentration than TPN so that osmolarity stays within limits that peripheral veins tolerate.
Example: PPN for 5 days while awaiting PICC placement; monitor IV site for phlebitis.
Usage notes
ASPEN guidance generally limits peripheral PN to about 900 mOsm/L. Because of large fluid volumes and limited calories, PPN cannot meet the full needs of most adults and is used only briefly. Lipid emulsions help raise calories without raising osmolarity much.
