PNF stands for Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, a rehabilitation abbreviation.

Therapy approach using diagonal movement patterns, resistance and stretch reflexes to improve strength, coordination and flexibility. PNF stretching techniques such as contract-relax are also used in sports.

Example: PNF D2 flexion pattern R UE with manual resistance, 3 x 8.

Usage notes

Developed in the 1940s and 1950s by physician Herman Kabat with physical therapists Margaret Knott and Dorothy Voss. The diagonal patterns reflect how movements combine in daily life. Contract-relax stretching increases range of motion more than static stretching in some studies.
