PLLC stands for Professional limited liability company, a company type abbreviation.
LLC formed by licensed professionals, such as doctors, lawyers, accountants, architects or engineers, in US states that require or allow a special form for professional practices. Members are shielded from the company's business debts but remain personally liable for their own professional malpractice.
Example: Lakeside Family Dentistry, PLLC is owned by three licensed dentists.
Usage notes
Not every state offers PLLCs; California, for example, bars LLCs from practicing licensed professions such as law, medicine and accounting, which use professional corporations or LLPs instead. State licensing boards often must approve PLLC formation. Written PLLC or P.L.L.C. after the name.
