PHQ-2 stands for Patient Health Questionnaire-2, a mental health & psychiatry abbreviation.
Two-question depression screen asking how often in the past two weeks a person has had little interest or pleasure in doing things and felt down, depressed or hopeless. A score of 3 or more out of 6 prompts the full PHQ-9.
Example: PHQ-2 score 4 at annual visit; PHQ-9 completed, score 13.
Usage notes
The two items are the first two questions of the PHQ-9 and correspond to the core symptoms of major depression. Its brevity suits busy primary care and pediatric settings. A negative PHQ-2 does not rule out depression when clinical suspicion is high.
