OR-8 stands for NATO other ranks grade 8, a military pay grade abbreviation.
Corresponds to US pay grade E-8: Army master sergeants and first sergeants, Navy senior chiefs, Air Force senior master sergeants and Marine master sergeants and first sergeants. The British Army's Warrant Officer Class 2 is OR-8.
Example: A US first sergeant and a British company sergeant major are both OR-8 in NATO terms.
Usage notes
British warrant officers are not officers in the US sense; they are the most senior soldiers below the commissioned ranks. A WO2 often holds the appointment of company sergeant major, the closest British counterpart to a US first sergeant.
