ophth stands for Ophthalmic, a medication route abbreviation.
Label and order term identifying a product made for use in the eye, such as drops, gels or ointments. Ophthalmic products must be sterile and have a pH and tonicity tolerated by the eye.
Example: Erythromycin 0.5% ophth ointment, 1 cm ribbon to both eyes once at birth.
Usage notes
Also written "ophth." or "oph." Clinicians sometimes prescribe ophthalmic drops for ear infections, but otic drops must never be used in the eye. Eye-drop bottles have cap colors standardized by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (for example, red for mydriatics, green for miotics) to help patients tell them apart.
