1. Out of memory

Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations

A condition in which a program or system cannot allocate more memory. On Linux the kernel's OOM killer terminates a process to free memory, and container platforms kill workloads that exceed their memory limit.

Example: The pod restarted with exit code 137, OOMKilled, so raise its memory limit or fix the leak.

Java reports the condition as java.lang.OutOfMemoryError, and Kubernetes shows the status OOMKilled. Exit code 137 means the process received signal 9 (SIGKILL), typical of these kills. Memory leaks, unbounded caches and loading large files fully into memory are common causes.

2. Out of mana

Texting & Internet Slang · Gaming Slang Abbreviations

Warning from a healer or spellcaster that their mana has run out, so they cannot cast spells until it regenerates. A cue for the group to slow down or retreat.

Example: Healer is OOM, pull back and let me drink before the next pack.

A classic MMORPG call, especially in World of Warcraft and EverQuest, where healers often had to sit and drink between fights. Groups that ignore an OOM healer frequently "wipe" (die together). Related to MP (mana points).
