OMNY stands for One Metro New York, a rail and transit abbreviation.
Contactless fare payment system for New York City subways and buses, letting riders tap a bank card, phone, smartwatch or OMNY card at the turnstile. It replaced the magnetic-stripe MetroCard.
Example: Just tap your phone on the OMNY reader; after 12 rides in a week the rest are free.
Usage notes
Introduced in 2019 and extended to the whole subway and bus network by 2021. OMNY's fare cap makes rides free after a weekly threshold, similar to an unlimited pass. The MetroCard, introduced in 1994, was phased out as OMNY took over. Pronounced "OM-nee."
