OCC stands for Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, a US federal agency abbreviation.
Charters, regulates and examines national banks, federal savings associations and federal branches of foreign banks. An independent bureau within the Treasury Department, it is led by the Comptroller of the Currency, who also sits on the FDIC board.
Example: The bank's charter conversion required OCC approval before it could operate as a national bank.
Usage notes
Created by the National Currency Act of 1863, it was originally charged with establishing a uniform national currency during the Civil War. State-chartered banks are supervised by state regulators together with the Federal Reserve or the FDIC, so a bank's charter determines its primary regulator. Banks with "National" or "N.A." in their names fall under the OCC.
