O-2 stands for Officer pay grade 2, a military pay grade abbreviation.
Second officer pay grade: First Lieutenant in the Army, Air Force, Space Force and Marine Corps, and Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Navy and Coast Guard. O-2s are platoon leaders, division officers, copilots and junior staff officers.
Example: As an O-2 he moved from platoon leader to the company executive officer job.
Usage notes
Promotion from O-1 is nearly automatic for officers in good standing. The insignia, a single silver bar, outranks the O-1 gold bar. NATO counts O-2 together with O-1 as OF-1, so a British lieutenant compares directly with a US first lieutenant.
