O-1E stands for Officer pay grade 1 with prior enlisted service, a military pay grade abbreviation.
Special pay grade for O-1 officers who served more than four years on active duty as enlisted members or warrant officers before commissioning. Related grades O-2E and O-3E give prior-service lieutenants and captains a higher pay table.
Example: Because she served six years as a sergeant before OCS, her LES shows pay grade O-1E.
Usage notes
Reserve service can also qualify when the member has accumulated enough retirement points, equivalent to four years of active duty. The "E" grades exist only for pay; rank, title and authority are the same as for other officers of the grade. Once an officer reaches O-4 the distinction disappears.
