1. Narita International Airport
Transportation & Travel · Airport Code Abbreviations
Tokyo's main international gateway for decades, located in Chiba Prefecture about 60 kilometers east of central Tokyo. It remains a major hub for long-haul and low-cost flights.
Example: The Narita Express from NRT to Shinjuku takes about 80 minutes.
ICAO code RJAA. Its 1978 opening followed years of violent protests by local farmers and student activists, known as the Sanrizuka struggle, against land expropriation; some farmland still sits inside the airport boundary. A nightly curfew limits operations. In shipping, NRT is an unrelated abbreviation for net register tonnage.
2. Nicotine replacement therapy
Medical · Drug Class Abbreviations
Smoking cessation aids that deliver nicotine without tobacco smoke: patches, gum, lozenges, inhalers and nasal spray. Combining a long-acting patch with a short-acting form is more effective than either alone.
Example: NRT: 21 mg patch daily plus 4 mg lozenge PRN cravings; quit date Monday.
Nicotine gum became available by prescription in the US in 1984 and over the counter in 1996, with patches following. NRT is considered safe in stable heart disease and is far less harmful than continued smoking. Varenicline, a partial nicotine receptor agonist, is generally more effective than single-form NRT.
3. Net register tonnage
Transportation & Travel · Maritime Abbreviations
Older measure of a ship's cargo-carrying volume, equal to gross register tonnage minus spaces such as crew quarters, engine rooms and navigation areas. It was used for port dues before being replaced by net tonnage.
Example: The 1920s freighter's registration papers list her at 3,200 NRT.
Like GRT, net register tonnage used the 100-cubic-foot register ton. It has been superseded by net tonnage under the 1969 convention. The initials also form the airport code of Tokyo's Narita International Airport, the far more common meaning.
