Usage notes
Founded in 1966 by Betty Friedan, Pauli Murray and others frustrated with weak enforcement of sex discrimination laws, it became the largest feminist organization in the country. Friedan, author of The Feminine Mystique, was its first president. Because the acronym is an ordinary word, it is always capitalized.
