NGO stands for Nongovernmental organization, a nonprofit abbreviation.
Organization that operates independently of government, usually on a nonprofit basis, to pursue social, humanitarian, environmental or advocacy goals. The term covers groups from small local charities to large international bodies such as Oxfam and Amnesty International.
Example: Several NGOs were allowed to deliver food aid across the border.
Usage notes
The term spread after Article 71 of the 1945 UN Charter provided for consultation with "non-governmental organizations". NGOs may receive government grants while remaining independent in governance. In US usage, "nonprofit" or "charity" is more common for domestic groups, while NGO is used especially in international development.
