NIL stands for Name, image and likeness, a sports league and organization abbreviation.
Athletes' right to earn money from endorsements, sponsorships, autographs and social-media posts that use their own name, image and likeness. The term is used mostly for US college athletes, who were barred from such deals by NCAA amateurism rules until July 1, 2021.
Example: The quarterback's NIL deals with a local car dealer and a sports drink reportedly top $1 million.
Usage notes
NIL rules changed after state laws, beginning with California's Fair Pay to Play Act of 2019, and the 2021 NCAA v. Alston Supreme Court ruling pushed the NCAA to adopt an interim policy. The House settlement approved in June 2025 added direct revenue sharing by schools, capped at about $20.5 million per school in its first year. Collectives are booster-funded groups that pool NIL money for athletes.
