Nephro stands for Nephrology, a medical specialty abbreviation.

Internal medicine subspecialty dealing with kidney function and disease, including chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, electrolyte and acid-base disorders, hypertension, glomerulonephritis, dialysis and the care of kidney transplant recipients. Adult training is a two-year fellowship after internal medicine.

Example: Potassium 6.8 and rising creatinine: Nephro is arranging urgent dialysis.

Usage notes

Many hospitals simply say "renal". The American Society of Nephrology publishes the field's major journals, and KDIGO issues international guidelines. Operations on the kidneys are performed by urologists and transplant surgeons rather than nephrologists.
