MFM stands for Maternal-fetal medicine, a medical specialty abbreviation.
Obstetric subspecialty caring for high-risk pregnancies, such as those complicated by maternal heart or kidney disease, diabetes, preeclampsia, twins, preterm labor or fetal anomalies. MFM specialists, also called perinatologists, complete a three-year fellowship after OB/GYN residency.
Example: MFM ultrasound at 20 weeks for detailed anatomy and cervical length.
Usage notes
The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) publishes guidance jointly with ACOG. MFM physicians perform detailed anatomy scans, amniocentesis and some fetal procedures. Many patients see MFM for consultation while continuing routine prenatal care with their own obstetrician.
