MSHA stands for Mine Safety and Health Administration, a US federal agency abbreviation.

Labor Department agency that enforces safety and health standards in coal, metal and nonmetal mines, inspecting every underground mine at least four times a year and surface mines at least twice. It also investigates mine accidents.

Example: MSHA closed the mine section after inspectors found excessive coal dust levels.

Usage notes

Established under the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977, MSHA replaced the Interior Department's Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration. Stricter rules followed the 2006 Sago Mine disaster and the 2010 Upper Big Branch explosion, which killed 29 miners. It is led by an Assistant Secretary of Labor and is pronounced "EM-sha".
