MOF stands for Metal-organic framework, a chemistry abbreviation.
Crystalline material built from metal ions or clusters linked by organic molecules into a porous, cage-like network with enormous internal surface area; a few grams can have the area of a football field. MOFs are studied for capturing carbon dioxide, harvesting water from desert air, storing gases and separating chemicals.
Example: The team's MOF captured CO2 from flue gas and released it again with mild heating.
Usage notes
Omar Yaghi popularized the term in the 1990s. Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar Yaghi shared the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for developing metal-organic frameworks. Tens of thousands of different MOFs have been reported, since metals and linkers can be combined in nearly endless ways.
