MFW stands for My face when, a social media abbreviation.
Introduces a reaction image showing the poster's supposed facial expression in a described situation, as in "mfw I see the electricity bill." Born on 4chan image boards and spread to Reddit and Twitter.
Example: Mfw my cat knocks the glass off the table while staring at me.
Usage notes
The format relies on a picture of a celebrity, animal or cartoon with an exaggerated expression, standing in for the poster's own face. Older internet users associate it with mid-2000s image-board culture. It is informal and meme-specific, so it rarely appears outside captions.
