MBBS stands for Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, a degree abbreviation also used in medicine.
Primary medical degree in the UK, India, Pakistan, Australia, Nigeria and many Commonwealth countries, typically a five- or six-year undergraduate program followed by an internship. It qualifies holders to practice as doctors and is treated as equivalent to the US MD for licensing, subject to exams such as the USMLE.
Example: Dr. Sharma completed her MBBS at AIIMS New Delhi before moving to the US for residency.
Usage notes
From Latin Medicinae Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgiae. Universities vary the letters: MBChB at Edinburgh and Manchester, BM BCh at Oxford, MB BChir at Cambridge, BMBS at Nottingham. Despite the bachelor title, graduates are addressed as Doctor; UK surgeons traditionally switch back to Mr or Ms after passing their surgical membership exams.
