M&A stands for Mergers and acquisitions, a finance abbreviation.
Area of corporate finance covering the buying, selling and combining of companies, including mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and tender offers. The term describes both the transactions themselves and the advisory business of the investment banks and law firms that arrange them.
Example: Global M&A volume rebounded in the second half as financing costs eased and boardrooms regained confidence.
Usage notes
Pronounced "M and A." A merger technically combines two companies into one entity, while an acquisition is one company buying another, but most deals are legally acquisitions however they are announced. League tables rank advisers by deal value. Large deals usually need antitrust clearance from authorities such as the US FTC or DOJ and the European Commission.
