LSST stands for Legacy Survey of Space and Time, an astronomy & Space abbreviation.
Ten-year survey of the southern sky by the Vera C. Rubin Observatory on Cerro Pachón, Chile, using an 8.4-meter telescope and the largest digital camera ever built, about 3,200 megapixels. It will image the visible sky every few nights, tracking asteroids, supernovae and changing objects.
Example: The LSST is expected to discover millions of new solar system objects.
Usage notes
The project was originally named the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope; the observatory was renamed in 2019 to honor dark matter pioneer Vera Rubin, and the survey kept the abbreviation with a new expansion. Rubin released its first images in June 2025. The survey generates around 20 terabytes of data each night.
