Orbit up to about 2,000 kilometers above Earth's surface, where satellites circle the planet in roughly 90 to 127 minutes. The International Space Station, the Hubble Space Telescope and broadband constellations such as Starlink operate in LEO, which is cheaper to reach and offers low signal delay.
Example: Each Starlink satellite orbits in LEO at about 550 kilometers.
Thousands of satellites now crowd LEO, raising concern about collisions and debris; Donald Kessler warned in 1978 that a cascade of collisions could make some orbits unusable, the Kessler syndrome. Atmospheric drag gradually lowers satellites in LEO, so they need boosts or eventually reenter. Apart from the Apollo lunar missions of 1968-1972, human spaceflight stayed in LEO for more than half a century.
