LRT stands for Light rail transit, a rail and transit abbreviation.
Urban rail system using electric trains that are lighter and smaller than subways, often running on dedicated tracks, in street medians and occasionally in mixed traffic. Light rail costs less to build than heavy rail and suits medium-sized cities.
Example: The city voted to fund a new LRT line connecting downtown to the airport.
Usage notes
Modern light rail began spreading in North America with San Diego's system in 1981. "Light" refers to capacity, not vehicle weight alone. Systems in Calgary, Portland, Minneapolis and Phoenix are well-known examples, and Asian cities such as Manila and Kuala Lumpur use LRT for elevated lines.
