1. London North Eastern Railway
Transportation & Travel · Rail and Transit Abbreviations
Government-owned train operating company that runs intercity services on the East Coast Main Line from London King's Cross to Leeds, Newcastle and Edinburgh. It took over the route in 2018 when the previous private operator gave up the franchise.
Example: LNER Azuma trains reach Edinburgh from King's Cross in about four and a half hours.
The name deliberately echoes the 1923-1947 London and North Eastern Railway, minus the "and." LNER operates Hitachi-built Azuma trains, introduced in 2019. It became one of the first examples of the UK's gradual return of passenger rail to public ownership.
2. London and North Eastern Railway

One of Britain's "Big Four" railway companies from 1923 to 1947, which ran trains such as the Flying Scotsman. Its streamlined locomotive Mallard set the world speed record for steam traction, 126 mph, in 1938.
Example: The LNER's Mallard still holds the steam speed record after more than 80 years.
The LNER was absorbed into British Railways on nationalization in 1948. Its locomotives, designed by Nigel Gresley, are preserved at the National Railway Museum in York. Context separates it from the modern, government-owned train company with a nearly identical name.
