JRPG stands for Japanese role-playing game, a video game abbreviation.
RPG made in Japan or in the Japanese style, typically with a fixed party of characters, a linear story, anime-influenced art and often turn-based combat. Series include Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Persona and Pokemon.
Example: Persona 5 Royal is the JRPG I recommend to anyone new to the genre.
Usage notes
The term arose in Western media in the 1990s to distinguish console RPGs from Western computer RPGs. Some Japanese developers dislike the label as a stereotype. Pronounced "J-R-P-G".
